We searched and searched 4 years ago when our then 3 year old was trying to figure out when it was ok to get out of bed. Came across this clock and bought it. Then bought a second one when we had another child. The main reason I bought it was to have a "color" indicator for when it was time to get out of bed, but definitely did NOT want an audible alarm which might wake the kid(s) up if they were still sleeping. This was the perfect solution as it turns green when it is time to get up, but does not make a sound (you can enable sound if you really wanted to.)
Tip #1: Most important tip... I wanted my son to not come out of his room until 7:00, and he tends to wake up at 7:00 give or take a few minutes. I explained how this clock worked when we first put it in his room. The trouble was, he would open his eyes a few minutes before 7:00 which was when it turned green. Kids don't have patience, so he would get up and come into our room and say "the clock won't turn green!" So what I realized is, I had to get him used to the fact that it WILL turn green. Solution: This is a little confusing to explain... I set the time on this clock about 10 minutes ahead. So when it is 7:00am on the clock, it is really 6:50am "real" time. That way, if he wakes up at 6:55 real time, he will see that the clock is already green and it's ok to get up. It was important to get it into his head that the clock actually works, it will turn green, and he was excited when he woke up and it was already green and time to get up! Then over the course of the next week, I slowly but surely moved the time on this clock backwards. I eventually ended at about 5 minutes behind "real" time, which gives me 5 extra minutes in the morning before he comes into our room!
Tip #2: Explain a couple of things to your kid(s). This is not a "wake up" clock as you and I (adults) think of an alarm clock. This is an "it's ok to get up/come out of your room" clock. Kids don't need a beeping alarm to wake them up at a scheduled time, they wake up early, or they wake up late. This clock is for those kids who wake up and can't tell time, so they don't know if it's 7:30 or 6:30am. Set it to the time that you, as the parent, want them to come bother you/wake you up. I didn't want my son coming to get me at 6:30am, but he can't tell time. Explain to your child that, "it's ok if you open your eyes before it turns green, but you can't come into my room or wake me up until it turns green." You could even tell them they can sit and play in their own room if they wake up, and then come get you when it turns green. It's important that you and they understand this distinction, and you're giving them the power to "wake up" whenever they want, but not to come get you! :-)
Downside: As others have mentioned, this clock was DEFINITELY hard to learn how to program. I kept the manual in the drawer under the clock because it is not intuitive at all, and I needed to re-read the instructions each time I had to change something. That being said, they have made it much easier to understand, and more intuitive over the last couple of years (between the time I bought the first one and the time I bought the second one) so my assumption is they are always iterating on this challenge.
We take this clock everywhere we go where we might be spending the night. Even if we're in a hotel room all together, the kids may open their eyes, but they have learned not to bother us before it turns green! Maybe my kids are more easily trained than others, haha, but it really works for us. We've used it for nearly 4 years with great success on two kids! Hope you have success too!

I KNOW THERE IS A GOD
Where do I begin. Do I begin with my son feet being in my face from co sleeping. Do i start with the sleepless nights trying to breath while being smothered by the body of my 2 1/2 year old son. Do I begin with the constant struggle of trying to sleep by myself. THIS ALARM CLOCK/NIGHT LIGHT is a gift from god. I mean when I plugged this device in heavens gate opened up and the cutest little cherubs came and kissed me on my nose. I mean as soon as I plugged this device in heavens gate opened and emitted a sound so beautiful I new I would be sleeping like a baby from this point on I WAITED TO GIVE THIS REVIEW SO I COULD HAVE AT LEAST A COUPLE DAYS TO DETERMINE ITS WORTH. ITS WORTH For starters all functions work as they detail. I will note that getting that screw ff the back took some work. I mean it took me like 15-20 minutes before I gave up. I never got it off. My son ended up knocking it off and the back flew off. So that's how that worked out. Also SOMETHING TO POINT OUT: UNLESS the cord is plugged in the light on feature at bed time does not work. I THINK THAT IS REALLY CRAPPY BUT NOT SO BAD THAT I WOULD RETURN. I just wished the light stayed on with just the battery option. The alarm clock works like a charm. It is loud enough for me to hear in the other room. The packaging was nice as well. It wasn't anything special but it was protected. The first night I used the light I explained that when the light is yellow he can play in his room. when it turns green he must get in the bed and lie down. HE DID JUST THAT. Again, I heard the fluttering of angels as I was whisked away to some place that mommies sleep peacefully. The second night went just as well. EXCEPT I accidentally turned on the alarm clock and scared the peace out of my son sleep. (Bad on my part) The third night went just as well! HE HAS BEEN SLEEPING IN HIS OWN ROOM SINCE I BOUGHT THIS DEVICE. I AM MORE THAN SATISFIED AND HAVE BEEN RECOMMENDING IT TO EVERYONE. IF YOU BUY ONE THAT DOES NOT FUNCTION CORRECTLY. BEAR WITH THE COMPANY BECAUSE EVERYONE MAKES MISTAKES. ORDER A NEW ONE AND GET TO THE PEACEFUL SLEEPING.
